At The Drive-In - Live in Sydney, Australia

January 26th, 2001 @ Big Day Out
w/

Notes

ATDI cut their set short, walking off after only 3 songs due to the crowd being overly aggressive. Early in the set Jim pleaded with the crowd to stop crowd surfing before someone gets hurt, but during Cosmonaut the crowd began to get very rowdy. As Cosmonaut ended and the intro to Lopsided is playing you can see several people crowd surfing. Cedric begins mocking the crowd, calling them sheep & saying “I have a microphone and you don’t. You’re a sheep. You watch TV way too much.” Channel V cut their feed and the band left the stage.  The performance was pretty messy to begin with, showcasing the worst tendencies of the final shows by At the Drive-In.  Maybe iconic for the wrong reasons, but with only three songs it is a quick digest.

Later that day during Limp Bizkit’s set the crowd began moshing and pushing forward from the start of their set. During their second song security began shining flashlights at the band and yelling for them to stop playing, as there was trouble at the front of the crowd. Not only did they not stop playing, Fred openly mocked security as they began playing the song “Break Stuff.” Finally the head security guard made his way to the stage and pleads with the crowd to back up. The damage had already been done. Videos show dozens of people being pulled out of the pit by security. Many needing medical attention. One of people pulled from the crowd was 16 year old Jessica Michalik. She had suffered from asphyxiation and died in the hospital 5 days later.

Tour Era

Is there a greater metaphor for the final initial run of At the Drive-In than Icarus?  The closer to the sun they flew the more their wings melted.  The greater to success, the greater the chaos.  Even for a band as notoriously energetic as At the Drive-In, the tours supporting Vaya and Relationship of Command were especially frenetic and dilapidated.

The work ethic these individuals had exuded ... read more
