At The Drive-In

Founded in 1994 by Jim Ward and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, At the Drive-In swiftly gained traction in the underground music scene with their first EP, “Hell Paso,” launching extensive DIY tours across Texas and later nationwide. Early performances in basements and intimate venues quickly established their reputation for high-energy live shows, notably capturing the attention of Flipside Records during a pivotal nine-person performance in Los Angeles, leading to their debut album, “Acrobatic Tenement.“

Following relentless touring and lineup changes, the band refined their sound, releasing significant projects like “In/Casino/Out” and the EP “Vaya.” The band’s decision to record “In/Casino/Out” live was born from their determination to capture their dynamic stage presence on record, a testament to their intense performance style. Throughout this period, At the Drive-In toured exhaustively, broadening their fanbase significantly with every show.

The band’s mainstream breakthrough arrived with 2000’s “Relationship of Command,” produced by Ross Robinson and featuring guest vocals from Iggy Pop. The album was critically acclaimed, with “One Armed Scissor” gaining widespread MTV airplay. This elevated their visibility, leading to high-profile television appearances and international tours, solidifying their status within the post-hardcore scene.

Despite their rapid ascent, internal strain and exhaustive touring schedules contributed to tensions within the band. A notable incident occurred at Australia’s Big Day Out in 2001, where the band halted their set over safety concerns related to aggressive crowd behavior, further highlighting their internal pressures. Shortly thereafter, citing physical and emotional exhaustion, the band abruptly canceled remaining tour dates.

In March 2001, at the peak of their popularity, At the Drive-In announced an indefinite hiatus, marking a sudden end to their prolific run. Artistic differences, especially regarding the musical direction between members, significantly contributed to their split. Post-breakup, members diverged musically—Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López formed The Mars Volta, pursuing progressive rock, while Ward, Hinojos, and Hajjar established Sparta, leaning toward alternative rock.

At the Drive-In briefly reunited in 2012 and then again more substantially from 2015 to 2018, releasing new material including the album “in•ter a•li•a” and the EP “Diamanté.” However, this second reunion ended with another hiatus after a final performance in Brazil. Their influence on the post-hardcore genre remains substantial, with their music and legacy widely acknowledged as benchmarks within the alternative music community
