“ It was incredible. It gave me goosebumps. VATO NEGRO, who appeared on the White Stage, is a three-piece unit formed by Juan Alderette, the bassist of The Mars Volta. It consists of Juan, a drummer, and a guitarist/keyboardist/effects player. The guitarist is a skinny guy with glasses who greets everyone in surprisingly good Japanese. And when the performance began, I thought, “Whoa, isn’t this King Crimson?!” The powerful drums that surged forward like a tidal wave, the guitarist who used various playing techniques and dub-like effects, and the undulating, heavy sound of the bass reminded me of King Crimson or Battles.
Especially the drummer. From beginning to end, it was practically a drum solo, with so many notes played. If we were to compare him to King Crimson, he’d be more like Pat Mastelotto, who’s also good at powerful drumming, rather than the delicate Bill Bruford. I was completely blown away by the drumming. And the guitarist with glasses would yell “Atatatatatatatatatatatatatataa
To everyone’s surprise, the White Stage was packed with people, and there were a lot of people in front of it. The band’s music wasn’t the kind that had easy-to-follow, danceable beats, with one irregular time signature after another, so it didn’t exactly draw a huge crowd or stop passersby in their tracks. However, for about 40 minutes, they unleashed a world like a ferocious monster running rampant, overwhelming the standing audience.”
